I did an internship in Denver this summer between my two years of grad school. I don't recall how Chapper (Tom) and I met, probably online, but we became instant friends based on our mutual love of Ween. When this show in Vail popped up we were very excited and decided to tape the show. We rented gear from an old deadhead in Denver who rented and sold taping equipment. I think his name was Mark Nutter? Anyway, This was the first show I taped for real. Up to this point I had been patching off friends. Based on this experience, I bought the setup I used for several years as soon as I got back to Chicago for my second year of grad school.
This show was simply awesome. Of course, I drove up to Vail from Denver in the pouring rain and apparently there was a mudslide that blocked the road shortly after I went through. I get to my hotel and...oh shit...I forgot my tickets back in Denver. With the shortest road blocked, there was zero chance of being able to go get them in time for the show. I went over the venue and basically pleaded with the guy at the door to let me in and told him my story (it was very sold out so I couldn't just buy another ticket). I told him I was taping the show and would send him a copy along with my tickets when I got back to Denver. Kindly, he obliged...thankfully. Garton's was a special place that can only really be understood if you have been there. The floor is (unsafely?) flexible and basically moved up and down several feet as people danced/jumped. It sucked the air in and out of the venue and it was like the room was breathing. Add altitude sickness and strong beer to that and I was pretty fucked up. Well we got a really nice pull anyway so enjoy.
PS: Chapper, if you are out there and see this, shoot me an email or PM.
